Natural Ways to Shift Out of Depression

All of us are at risk of depression at some point in our lives. It doesn't matter if you are female or male, young or old, rich or poor. Depression is gender blind and doesn't practice age discrimination. And with many people feeling that things are getting worse, it is harder to find ways to shift your mood.
This disorder affects approximately 18.8 million American adults or close to 10% of the U.S. population. Since almost 80% of the people suffering from depresson aren't getting treatment, knowing natural ways to lift your mood is important. Here are seven natural steps which will aid you on the path of feeling better mentally:
1. Accept the fact that all of us have things about ourselves that we do not like. Being depressed can make you feel isolated and alone. 15% of depressed people will commit suicide. If you think that someone is depressed don't ignore it. The loss of a job or a loved one is enough to send many people into a downward spiral. Trust your intuition, if you think a person is acting differently, take time to question them closely about their feelings. Many people don't get treatment because they are either too embarrassed or they are not able to afford medical care. And even with medication, many people have trouble feeling better. By 2020, depression will be the second leading killer after heart disease.
2. Exercise on a daily basis. Exercise plays a big part in releasing endorphins in the brain which help us think optimistically. By setting small goals such as 15 minutes of daily exercise you can maintain good mental and physical health.

3. Practice a healthy diet. Adding Omega-3 fatty acids to your diet is one of the best ways to fight mood swings. You can even purchase fish oil capsules as a way to supplement your diet.
4. Recognize your own warning signs. Many people are aware of physical, emotional and changes that trigger depression. For some people, a particular weather pattern, song or going to a certain place will get them down. Know what bothers you, be aware of your thoughts and make a plan to change before your mental state spirals into a deep, dark place. Pay attention to your self-talk.
5. Make an effort to get a good night's sleep. One of the most visible warning signs of depression is insomina. Honor sleep by not getting into deep thought about everything that is going wrong wrong in your life before bed. Develop a spiritual practice for the morning and evening to make peace with whatever is going on in your world.
6. Be open to trying different treatments. Changing doctors or exploring a new treatment might be the way to shift you out of a dark period in your life. Rapid Eye Movement Therapy has been found to be very effective for people who are experiencing prolonged grieving. Acupuncture is also another treatment option which has gained popularity for depression.

7. Take the time to laugh. Purchase your favorite movie or comedy series and put it on when you find yourself feeling bad. Laugher, and appreciation have been found to be good for our health and well-being, especially when we feel sad. We have a choice in controlling our thoughts.
